Which type of camcorder should I get?

There are many different kinds Mini DVD, DVD, Hard Drive and more but I don't want to get something that is going to become obsolete in a few months. I want good picture quality and a easy to run program. I also want a good zoom and I'm willing to pay up to 700 U.S. dollars.
